PERINATAL GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE: 9 MONTHS+

Published in Programs

The project focuses on Perinatal Gender-Based Violence (PGBV) — a form of gender-based violence that occurs during pregnancy and the first year following childbirth.
Despite its distinct characteristics, PGBV is often under-recognized and not clearly differentiated from other forms of gender-based violence.

Project Objectives

  • To highlight the specific characteristics of PGBV and its impact on the physical and mental health of women who experience it, as well as on their unborn or newborn children.
  • To inform and raise awareness among women and the general public about the concept, manifestations, recognition, and the ways of response to PGBV, with the ultimate goal of preventing and combating it.
  • To train healthcare professionals working with women in the perinatal period, enabling them to identify, prevent, and respond to PGBV instances.

Target Groups

  1. Healthcare professionals in the region of Thessaly
  2. Women, pregnant women and new mothers
  3. Expectant and new fathers
  4. The general public

While the project is implemented in the region of Thessaly, its outcomes and deliverables are designed to have a nationwide impact.
The project is scheduled to run from May 2025 to January 2026.

Download the poster and the flyer of the project.

The project "Perinatal Gender-Based Violence: 9 Months +" is implemented under the program "Preventing gender-based violence and violence against children (PREVENT)," with the leading organization being the NGO Fainareti and the partner organization being the Institute of Entrepreneurship Development (iED). The PREVENT program is co-funded by the European Union through the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) programme, the Bodossaki Foundation, and the NGO Support Center, with a total grant amount of €2.3 million.

FAINARETI was founded in 2006 with the aim of research and intervention for the promotion of women's and family health in Greece. Its main objective is the study, design and development of programs and actions of all kinds to promote the care and support of the pregnant woman, the new mother of the newborn and the family.

The contact details of FAINARETI, through which the user can contact it, are:

α. Postal address: 2 Korai & Omirou, Nea Smyrni, P.O. Box 11721

2. What are the purposes and legal basis of the data processing?

The Best Start app has been created to serve as an information tool on perinatal, neonatal, infant and maternal health issues. The purpose of the application is to share the scientific knowledge and experience of FAINARETI, as it has been acquired through its many years of activity.

In this context, Best Start is installed and used for free, without any charge to the user or any obligation to participate in the programs of FAINARETI. Through the application, the user can find useful information material for the case he/she is interested in, but also keep a personal file/diary on the issues that concern him/her.

In order to install and use Best Start, it is necessary to accept the terms of use and create a user account, using an email and password. No other information is required for the user to access the application material.

After creating an account, the user has the option to add personal information and enter personal notes, to which FAINARETI does not have access.

The legal basis for the processing of personal data is the execution of a contract, as it consists in the acceptance by the user of the terms of use of the service and the provision by FAINARETI of the informative content of the application. Based on the nature of Best Start, which is addressed to people interested in issues related to the prenatal or postnatal stage of a pregnancy, it is presumed that the use of the application alone may disclose health data of the user. In this context, the processing of such data is allowed, in accordance with the exceptions of Article 9 of the GDPR, on the basis of the express consent of the user, as provided at the account creation stage.

In the context of providing the services and performing the contract, FAINARETI may use the user's email address to send additional information material regarding its actions. This promotional communication is legalized, according to article 11 paragraph 3 of Law 3471/2006, in the collection of the contact data acquired during the creation of the account, provided that the user does not object to it by selecting the relevant opt-out option provided in a clear and explicit manner.

3. Which personal data are collected

The personal data that are collected during the installation of the application and the creation of an account are the user's email address and the password created by the user.

After account creation, the personal data collected optionally are personal information that the user can add to his/her account, such as name, height, weight, social security number and date of birth. Moreover, also optionally, the user has the possibility to keep personal notes on issues of concern or interest to him/her.

When using the application, general information (data logs) are collected, such as:

Mobile phone device data, operating system, language, browser type and version, internet protocol address (IP - address), technical data, which are collected to support the operation of the application.

Usage data, such as date and time of entry into the application, behavioral data (opening of information material) and request data such as date and time of request, content of request, which are collected to support the use of the application and the enrichment of the provided material.

These data, with the exception of request data, are not associated with personal information held on the device and are anonymised data. The request data are associated with the account identifiers (user email) and are kept for the purpose of proving the exercise and satisfaction of requests of the General Data Protection Regulation.

It should be noted that FAINARETI does not want to know the personal data entered in the application, so it does not have access to them, with the exception of the user's identifiers (email - password), which are necessary to ensure access to the account. In addition, FAINARETI does not carry out any act of correlation of these data with data already kept in its files and no act of profiling of the users of the application.

4. Who are the recipients of the data

The personal data collected through the application are managed by VIDAVO S.A., which acts as the processor on behalf of FAINARETI. VIDAVO is the company that has developed Best Start and is responsible for the technical support of its operation. Apart from VIDAVO, users' personal data are not disclosed or transmitted to third party recipients.

5. The data retention period

The personal data collected through the application are kept for as long as the user maintains his account. The user of the application has at any time the possibility to choose the deletion of his account, which automatically leads to the deletion of the personal data related to this account.

It should be noted that simply uninstalling the application does not constitute account deletion, nor does it result in the deletion of data, as its effects are reversed any time the user decides to reinstall the application and log in to his/her account.

In any case, the personal data collected through the application will be automatically deleted after six (6) months from the last login of the user to his/her account.

6. The rights of the user - data subject

The user of the application is the data subject of the data collected through its installation and use. For these personal data, the user has the rights of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which can be exercised as appropriate, either through the relevant option provided by the application, or by submitting a request to FAINARETI.

These rights are:

a. Right of access. The right of access includes the right to obtain a copy of the information held, which can be exercised and satisfied through the application.

b. Right of rectification. This right is exercised through the options to modify/complete the user's personal information through the application.

c. Right of erasure: It is the right of the user to request the deletion of his/her data. The deletion of data is exercised through the application, either by deleting specific information that the user has entered, or by using the "Delete account" option provided to the user.

For any matter of interest to you, you can contact us directly in any of the following ways:

a. Our postal address is 2 Korai st. & Omirou, 1st. fl., Nea Smyrni, Athens, 11721

b. Our phone number is 210-9319054

c. Our e-mail address is: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

d. Our Data Protection Officer (DPO) e-mail address is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

1.3 What are the principles we apply to the processing of your data.

Regardless of the reason why we obtain your personal information and the purpose for which we process your personal data, all our processing operations follow the principles governing the lawfulness of processing.

Please note that by processing operations we primarily mean the collection of your data, its storage in our records, its use (depending on the purpose of each case) and its transfer when strictly necessary.

For all these processing operations we ensure that:

A. Your personal data are processed lawfully and fairly in a transparent manner. ("lawfulness, objectivity and transparency")

Any collection and processing of your personal data is done for explicitly defined purposes and is based on a specific legal basis. This legal basis may in some cases be your consent, but often this processing can be done without it, if the purpose of the processing justifies the use of another legal basis. For example, where you submit your personal data for the purpose of entering into a contract with Fainareti, your consent would not be lawful since the processing would be based on the legal basis of contract performance. Similarly, most processing of your personal data relating to the provision of health services by the Day Centre would also not require your consent, since this processing (which in fact includes health data, and therefore special category personal data) would be based on the legal basis of the provision of health services.

The purpose and legal basis of each processing operation we carry out will be described in more detail and on a case-by-case basis in the relevant section of each case. However, we should inform you from the outset that any lawful basis we are relying upon has been thoroughly analysed and substantiated, therefore we will not mislead you by asking for your consent when such consent is not necessary.

B. Your personal data are collected for specified, explicit and legitimate purposes and are not further processed in a way incompatible with those purposes. ("purpose limitation")

We do not collect your personal data if there is no legitimate purpose that justifies such collection. This purpose will be respected throughout the processing, from collection to the eventual deletion of your personal data, with the sole exception of the case in which there is a need to process it for another purpose, in which case we will follow all the conditions set out by law.

C. Your personal data that we collect and hold are adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary for the purposes for which they are processed. ("data minimisation")

The fact that the processing of your personal data has an explicitly defined purpose and a clear legal basis does not mean that we are allowed to process your information that is not necessary for the purposes of the processing. For this reason, we ensure that the personal data we process is only what is necessary to meet your request or to fulfil our mission.

D. Your personal data is accurate and, where necessary, updated. ("accuracy")

We take every step to ensure that the information we hold about you is accurate, without violating the previous principle of data minimisation.

For example, when you apply for participation in a Day Centre programme, we may ask you to show an identification document (identity card, residence permit, passport) to ensure that your details are accurately recorded, as well as a document confirming your social security number.

E. Your personal data are kept in a form which allows the identification of the data subjects only for the time necessary for the purposes of processing the personal data. ("storage period limitation")

We do not store your personal data except for the period necessary for the purpose of the processing. For example, when you submit your data for the purpose of concluding an employment contract with our organisation, this data is only retained if this contract is concluded; otherwise, it is deleted within a short period of time.

An exception to this principle is where legislation requires your personal health data to be kept as a medical record. In this case, the data are kept for the period of time provided for by law.

Detailed information on the storage period is provided in the relevant sections of Part B.

F. Your personal data are processed in a way that ensures their adequate security and protection against unauthorised or unlawful processing and accidental loss, destruction or damage. ("integrity and confidentiality")

We take all necessary technical and organisational measures to ensure the security of your personal data.

1.4 What right do you have

From the moment we collect information relating to you, you become a data subject of the data concerning you, therefore you are entitled to all the rights enshrined in and protected be the GDPR.

These rights are:

The right of access

You have the right to obtain, at any time, confirmation as to whether we are processing your personal data and what it is, and to obtain copies of that data.

The right to rectification

You have the right to obtain, at any time, the correction of information that you believe to be inaccurate. You also have the right to request the completion of information that you consider incomplete.

The right to erasure

You have the right to obtain the erasure of your personal data under certain circumstances and conditions.

Please note that the right to erasure cannot be satisfied where your personal data relates to health data held in a medical record. In this case, the national law provides for the mandatory retention of the record for a certain period of time, which means that even if your data is no longer necessary to fulfil the purpose for which it was collected, we are legally obliged to retain it.

The right to restriction of processing

You have the right to obtain restriction of processing of your information under certain circumstances and conditions.

The right to object

You have the right to object to the processing of your personal data.

The right to data portability

This right only applies to the information you have given us. You have the right to request the transfer of the information you have given us to another organisation or to yourself. The right only applies if we process information based on your consent, or a contract and the processing is carried out by automated means.

Further clarification regarding your rights

Your rights are not absolute. Their observance is provided for by law, subject to conditions relating to the characteristics of each request and the legal basis of the processing, and may be prevented by the protection of the rights of other persons, the exercise of our legitimate interests and the adherence to our legal obligations.

In any case, we encourage you to exercise your rights whenever you consider it appropriate or necessary and we are committed to examining your request and to respond (positively or negatively) promptly and within the time limit set out by law.

The processing of your request will be free of charge, however, in the case where your request is manifestly unfounded or excessive, in particular because of its repetitive nature, we may:

(a) impose a reasonable fee, taking into account the administrative costs of providing the information or communicating or performing the requested action; or

(b) refuse to act on the request.

This possibility, which is applicable only in specific cases, with a reasoned reply, and for no reason whatsoever, will be a pretext for not following up your request.

1.5 Where do we transfer your personal data

Under no circumstances do we share your personal data with third parties for the purpose of direct marketing of products or services.

We only use processors who provide sufficient assurances that appropriate technical and organisational measures are in place to meet our obligations and ensure the security of your data. We only use processors who provide sufficient assurances that appropriate technical and organisational measures are in place to meet our obligations and ensure the security of your data. We only use processors who provide sufficient assurances that appropriate technical and organisational measures are in place to meet our obligations and ensure the security of your data. The necessary contracts are concluded for this processing.

Your data is kept securely and retained by the processors only for the period we indicate to them. This means that they will not be able to further process your personal data unless we have expressly instructed them to do so, nor will they be able to pass your personal data on to other third parties.

In some cases, we are legally obliged to transfer your data. For example, following a court order or when requested by third parties to exercise or support legitimate claims. With regard to health data relating to the activities of the Day Centre, your personal data may be transferred to the relevant Mental Health Directorate of the Ministry of Health, which acts as a supervisory authority, or to any other public authority or database required by law.

We do not transfer your personal data to third countries or international organisations for any reason.

1.6 The right to lodge a complaint with the Data Protection Authority.

Your personal data, which we process, belongs to you as the data subject. The processing we carry out is subject to specific conditions and purposes.

In any case you are not content with this processing, its scope, duration, purposes and recipients, or you consider that we are violating your rights to your personal data, you may contact us and/or file a complaint with the competent supervisory authority.

The competent supervisory authority is the Hellenic Data Protection Authority - HDPA (1-3 Kifissias Ave., 115 23 Athens, Greece). At the following link you can find detailed information on how to file a complaint:

https://www.dpa.gr/index.php/en/individuals/complaint-to-the-hellenic-dpa

Please note that, for the best possible handling of any request you may have, it is suggested that you contact Fainareti first, as otherwise, the competent authority may reject your complaint due to non-compliance with the due process.

Published in Η αρχή της Ζωής

Στόχος της πρώτης διάλεξης ήταν να απαντηθούν μια σειρά από ερωτήματα: Πώς είναι η ζωή μέσα στη μήτρα; Πώς αναπτύσσεται ο άνθρωπος από τη σύλληψη μέχρι τον τοκετό; Πότε αναπτύσσονται τα όργανα; Τι καταλαβαίνει και τι αισθάνεται το έμβρυο στα διάφορα στάδια ανάπτυξής του; Μπορεί να  ακούσει; Μπορεί να νιώσει πόνο; Είναι απόλυτα προστατευμένο από το περιβάλλον ή υπάρχουν επιρροές; Μπορούν οι γονείς να βοηθήσουν την ψυχοσωματική ανάπτυξη του παιδιού τους ήδη από την ενδομήτρια ζωή;

Η δεύτερη ενότητα εξέτασε  τι συμβαίνει κατά τη διαδικασία της φυσιολογικής γέννας στο γυναικείο σώμα. Ποια τα οφέλη του φυσιολογικού τοκετού για την μητέρα και το νεογνό; Πώς μπορεί η γυναίκα να προετοιμαστεί για φυσιολογικό τοκετό; Ποιες περιττές ιατρικές παρεμβάσεις θα πρέπει να αποφεύγονται; Ποιες τακτικές λειτουργούν υποστηρικτικά και ποιες αποθαρρύνουν ή φοβίζουν τη γυναίκα και τους νέους γονείς; Τι πρέπει να γνωρίζει μια γυναίκα εάν επιθυμεί να γεννήσει φυσιολογικά μετά από καισαρική τομή; Ποιοι ιατρικοί λόγοι μπορεί να οδηγήσουν την γυναίκα σε καισαρική τομή;

Η τρίτη ενότητα εξέτασε το θέμα του μητρικού θηλασμού. Γιατί παρά τα πολλά θετικά στοιχεία του μητρικού γάλακτος δεν επιλέγεται ο μητρικός θηλασμός από μια σημαντική μερίδα γυναικών στην χώρα μας; Πώς δυσκολεύονται οι γυναίκες όταν ξεκινούν τον θηλασμό; Ποιες διεθνείς και εθνικές πρωτοβουλίες ευνοούν την προαγωγή του; Ποιες δράσεις έχουν ως αποτέλεσμα την ενθάρρυνση των μητέρων; Πώς η επιθυμία για θηλασμό συνδέεται με τη διάθεση και το συναίσθημα της μητέρας και πώς αυτά επηρεάζουν τη συμπεριφορά της;

Ποια ερωτήματα προβληματίζουν τις γυναίκες που επιλέγουν να γίνουν μητέρες; Ποια είναι η εμπειρία της μετάβασης στη μητρότητα για τη σύγχρονη γυναίκα; Τι σκέφτεται και τι νιώθει μια γυναίκα στην εγκυμοσύνη αλλά και μετά τον τοκετό για το σώμα της, τη σχέση της με το παιδί, τον σύντροφο, την καριέρα της, τη ζωή της γενικότερα που αλλάζει; Τι σημαίνει «προσαρμογή» στη ζωή με το παιδί και πώς μπορεί να προετοιμαστεί καλύτερα για αυτή τη μετάβαση; Ποιες είναι οι ψυχικές δυσκολίες που εμφανίζονται στην εγκυμοσύνη και μετά τον τοκετό και πως αυτές αντιμετωπίζονται; Πώς μπορούν οι σύγχρονες μητέρες να υποστηριχθούν ώστε να απολαμβάνουν τη μητρότητα αλλά και την προσωπική τους ζωή;

Η δράση υποστηρίζεται από την εταιρεία DATALY TECH I.K.E.
